I found it really hard to narrow my choice down to only three, so there\u2019s a bit of cheating going on &#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What book would I like to have written?<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Book One<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;m tempted to say <em>Pride and Prejudice<\/em> but, in my own (extremely humble) way, I feel I\u2019m writing a version of that every time I begin a romance novel. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/PP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2059\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/PP.jpg\" alt=\"P&amp;P\" width=\"218\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/PP.jpg 218w, http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/PP-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I like to write books which transport the reader out of the world they\u2019re in and into a fictional one. That\u2019s what reading does for me \u2013 I like to get lost. I\u2019ve lots of books that I go back to and reread, <em>Lady of Hay<\/em> by Barbara Erskine being one of them. It was the first time-slip I\u2019d read. I love the hypnosis mechanism of how Jo accesses the past and I\u2019ve got a glancing interest in past life regression.The middle ages are so far removed from us in the 21<sup>st<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> century as to make it almost impossible to imagine. Barbara Erskine lets us smell the herbs in the rushes on the floor, we can feel the slippery furs against our naked bodies as we settle down to sleep and she forces us to witness the awful cruelties of life in the thirteenth century. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Lady-of-Hay.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2070\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Lady-of-Hay.jpg\" alt=\"Lady of Hay\" width=\"218\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Lady-of-Hay.jpg 218w, http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Lady-of-Hay-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I read the book in the 1980s and loved it instantly. I reread it often and the passing of thirty years has given the book an enjoyably nostalgic element. Jo uses a typewriter, there are no mobile phones, she eats a pasty and drinks a can of lager in Hay town square. Now she\u2019d sip a latte and nibble on a wrap while looking up things on Safari!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What book inspires me?<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Book Two<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I\u2019ve thought a lot about this. It\u2019s between <em>Atonement<\/em> and <em>The Magus<\/em>. I think I must enjoy unreliable narrators. Sometimes I relish being made to work hard, to be stretched, and teased. I\u2019ve only ever read <em>The Magus<\/em> once and that was a long time ago but it\u2019s stayed with me. It\u2019s a towering work of quite incredible intellectual power. I know my limits and I know I couldn\u2019t possibly write anything like that! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Magus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2071\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Magus.jpg\" alt=\"Magus\" width=\"218\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Magus.jpg 218w, http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Magus-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Atonement<\/em> is simply a gripping read. I remember being glued to it during a long flight and tuned out everything around me. I couldn\u2019t believe the ending. I remember being physically shocked. The other book which had the same effect was <em>Captain Corelli\u2019s Mandolin.<\/em> I read it on holiday and, suffering a plane delay on the way home,\u00a0got to the bit where the Italian soldiers are double-crossed. I sat on the marble floor of the Greek airport and cried in public. I love books which make me believe in them so much, they have a visceral effect.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Atonement.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2072\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Atonement.jpg\" alt=\"Atonement\" width=\"218\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Atonement.jpg 218w, http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Atonement-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My latest book?<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Book Three<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The newest book is the second in the Millie Vanilla set of novellas: <em>Summer Loves<\/em>. I loved writing these as I really enjoyed creating the town of Berecombe and its inhabitants.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Summer-Loves-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2065\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Summer-Loves-1-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"Summer Loves\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Summer-Loves-1-198x300.jpg 198w, http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Summer-Loves-1.jpg 330w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It\u2019s completely fictional but is loosely based on Lyme Regis \u2013 except it\u2019s in Devon. It has a sea front, a steep main street lined with shops, a harbour at one end and a theatre at the other. If you know Lyme, you\u2019ll recognise the bits I\u2019ve stolen. The main advantage of it being fictional is I can add things if needs be. The main problem is making up a name which sounds realistic. Fictional place names can sometimes sound very false. As far as I know, there is no Berecombe even though it sounds so authentic. I\u2019m trying to think up another seaside place name and it\u2019s really not easy. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Lyme-Oct-029.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1694\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Lyme-Oct-029-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Lyme Oct 029\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Lyme-Oct-029-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Lyme-Oct-029-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I love writing about small communities and adore writing larger than life, eccentric characters. Biddy Treeby being one. I became very fond of Biddy and her deaf assistance poodle, Elvis. He\u2019s based on a real assistance dog I used to know but Biddy is completely made up. I\u2019ve got a horrible feeling I\u2019ll channel her when older. The other character I loved writing is Millie\u2019s friend Dora. She\u2019s so spiky but is a mess of insecurity on the inside \u2013 and I love how she and Mike spark each off. You just know they love each other like crazy but neither wants to admit it. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I\u2019ve just finished writing <em>Millie Vanilla: Christmas Weddings<\/em> and was quite tearful when it came to an end. I\u2019d really like to revisit them all again at some point in the future.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Have you got books which inspire you or you wish you&#8217;d written?
