This could be&nbsp;dangerous&nbsp;as&nbsp;there\u2019s nothing I like better!&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First up, the book<\/strong><strong>(<\/strong><strong>s<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;that I loved so much&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>I had to buy new&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>copies<\/strong>&nbsp;because&nbsp;I\u2019d&nbsp;destroyedmy&nbsp;original&nbsp;ones&nbsp;by&nbsp;reading&nbsp;them so much. It\u2019s confession time.&nbsp;Although I&nbsp;devouredadventure books such as&nbsp;the Angelique&nbsp;series by Sergeanne Golon&nbsp;and Leslie&nbsp;Charteris\u2019s&nbsp;The Saint series,&nbsp;my true loves&nbsp;that have stayed with me&nbsp;are&nbsp;<em>These Old Sh<\/em><em>ades<\/em>&nbsp;by Georgette Heyer and&nbsp;<em>Pride &amp; Prejudice<\/em>&nbsp;by Jane Austen. Both have independent heroines&nbsp;and dialogue to die for.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Shades<\/em>&nbsp;is a tougher story as the stakes are so high and the balance&nbsp;between abject poverty andexaggerated&nbsp;luxury&nbsp;is more pronounced.&nbsp;At first, there is little pity in Avon\u2019s motivation&nbsp;\u2013 revenge \u2013&nbsp;but of course&nbsp;he is&nbsp;redeemed.&nbsp;Elizabeth Bennett\u2019s world is precarious&nbsp;but despite the pressures of manners&nbsp;and&nbsp;matrimony,&nbsp;she holds her own. Austen and Heyer are both&nbsp;suchdownright clever&nbsp;and elegant writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"619\" height=\"483\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/767FB32C-84E5-422B-96FD-3539C33AFB19.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2858\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/767FB32C-84E5-422B-96FD-3539C33AFB19.jpeg 619w, http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/767FB32C-84E5-422B-96FD-3539C33AFB19-300x234.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The boo<\/strong><strong>k<\/strong><strong>(s)<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;I wish I<\/strong><strong>\u2019d written<\/strong>\u2026 Hm, you can tell I\u2019m a Libran&nbsp;who&nbsp;can never make up&nbsp;her&nbsp;mind.&nbsp;As an alternative history thriller writer, I would love to have written&nbsp;<em>Fat<\/em><em>herland&nbsp;<\/em>by Robert Harris. Not only for his idea of building an excellent&nbsp;thriller&nbsp;round his policeman Xavier March, but for his projection&nbsp;of a Germany that won the Second World War and writing it so succinctly. His is a style I strive to copy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the second one is William Boyd\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Restless<\/em>&nbsp;featuring&nbsp;mother and daughter across the decades&nbsp;in a story&nbsp;of deception, foregone love&nbsp;and spying.&nbsp;It\u2019s subtle, nuanced&nbsp;and engaging on many levels; his&nbsp;perception of the mind\u2019s working is&nbsp;breathtaking.&nbsp;William Boyd writes like a dream, but&nbsp;he drops humour&nbsp;in here and there just to tease you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I could combine&nbsp;the style, dialogue, wit and cleverness of&nbsp;all of these&nbsp;in my own writing, I would count myself&nbsp;incredibly blessed!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"590\" height=\"463\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/183E8EAE-0FFC-41C0-87AF-80966D9D8EF5.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2859\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/183E8EAE-0FFC-41C0-87AF-80966D9D8EF5.jpeg 590w, http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/183E8EAE-0FFC-41C0-87AF-80966D9D8EF5-300x235.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>And lastly,&nbsp;<em>Double Identity<\/em>,<\/strong>&nbsp;which came out on 7 January. It\u2019s&nbsp;a thriller, not&nbsp;an&nbsp;alternative history one&nbsp;featuring&nbsp;Roma Novans Carina&nbsp;or&nbsp;Aurelia, but a contemporary&nbsp;European crime thriller.&nbsp;<br><br><em>Deeply in&nbsp;love, a chic Parisian lifestyle before her.
