When you write novels you are collecting together lots of different strands and trying to make them into a book that flows and hangs together. It is often said that a book that is easy to read has often been difficult to write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Totally agree on that!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an author, I collect many different bits and pieces in the hope that one day they will prove useful in my work. There are the obvious things, of course, the lovely notebooks, the pens, the books on novel writing craft. But then there are snippets from magazines, pictures of places and photographs of people, which may or may not become the basis for future locations and characters. Then there are research notes for subjects often only touched on in your work, but you want to get the detail correct, so you have usually spent hours looking at YouTube videos. I also try to note down my feelings when events happen in my life or in the lives of those close to me, just in case my characters ever experience those situations. For example, I have notes that I made before going down to the operating theatre for an operation on file.

Can\u2019t say I\u2019m quite as dedicated as to jot down notes on the way to the operating theatre, but with you on everything else!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are never off duty as a writer and my ears prick up at interesting conversation snippets overheard in coffee shops, or unusual names used when a mother calls to her child in a playground.<\/p>\n\n\n

I guess what I am trying to say is that nothing is ever wasted when you write novels and the process itself makes you into a people watcher and an observer of life in all its guises. Well you have to fill those lovely purchased notebooks with something!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
