As I wrote&nbsp;<em>The Blue Bells Chronicles,&nbsp;<\/em>a time travel\/historical adventure featuring a modern orchestral trombonist caught in medieval Scotland,&nbsp;I&nbsp;often saw \u2018the Laird\u2019s great hunting hounds\u2019&nbsp;in the castle.&nbsp;These were the ancestors of today\u2019s Irish Wolfhound\u2014the tallest dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While writing, I&nbsp;immersed&nbsp;myself&nbsp;in&nbsp;medieval&nbsp;experiences, to better write&nbsp;that&nbsp;world. I hiked Scotland\u2019s hills&nbsp;in&nbsp;medieval boots&nbsp;and visited castles. Chris&nbsp;and I&nbsp;owned medieval weapons, musical instruments, and&nbsp;tapestries.&nbsp;We tasted medieval recipes. Chris bought a sackbut\u2014a medieval trombone.&nbsp;I studied Scots Gaelic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were missing a few authentic experiences\u2014riding a horse over caltropes, attack by trebuchets, and the laird\u2019s great hunting hounds. We were willing to forgo the first&nbsp;two. But I&nbsp;set my heart on an Wolfhound.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Liadan-Eyes-of-the-Author.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Liadan-Eyes-of-the-Author.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4678\" style=\"width:446px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Liadan-Eyes-of-the-Author.jpeg 720w, http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Liadan-Eyes-of-the-Author-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br>I found her in Cincinnati\u2014a gangly, 87-pound purebred Wolfhound&nbsp;puppy:&nbsp;<em>Liadan. Grey Lady&nbsp;<\/em>in Scots Gaelic. We&nbsp;drove through the night.&nbsp;I was told&nbsp;Liadan didn\u2019t like cars.&nbsp;But&nbsp;she jumped straight into ours! I was in love!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We reached home at two am Thanksgiving morning. The kids were crazy about her. She&nbsp;loved&nbsp;them immediately. Our first lesson in how big these dogs are was when Liadan casually stepped over the back of the couch. Later, as I sat on&nbsp;a&nbsp;tall chair at my kitchen&nbsp;counter,&nbsp;her&nbsp;nose&nbsp;poked&nbsp;my shoulder.&nbsp;When she stood on her hind legs, paws on my shoulders, she looked down on me.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Liadan-as-dog-costume.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Liadan-as-dog-costume-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4679\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7500056998244454;width:472px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Liadan-as-dog-costume-768x1024.jpeg 768w, http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Liadan-as-dog-costume-225x300.jpeg 225w, http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Liadan-as-dog-costume-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Liadan-as-dog-costume.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br>Irish Wolfhounds \u2018dock,\u2019&nbsp;where&nbsp;they&nbsp;bow&nbsp;their heads&nbsp;against&nbsp;your leg. They also&nbsp;<em>leeaaan<\/em>! When we took Liadan to meet three other Wolfhounds, Chris&nbsp;had two Wolfhounds&nbsp;<em>leaning<\/em>&nbsp;on each side\u2014550 pounds of dog!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Irish Wolfhounds&nbsp;will&nbsp;take&nbsp;an&nbsp;arm between their jaws and gently shake\u2014no pressure. Liadan&nbsp;took&nbsp;my kids\u2019 entire heads between her jaws! Kids at the park flocked&nbsp;around her. Parents took pictures. One woman&nbsp;feared&nbsp;Liadan&nbsp;but snapped pictures of her child beside a dog that, even seated,&nbsp;towered above him. My son one day heard a wrestling teammate talking about \u2018that lady with that huge dog.\u2019 He got a kick out of saying, \u201cThat\u2019s my&nbsp;mom!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until 2020, I&nbsp;gave&nbsp;talks&nbsp;on&nbsp;medieval history. We brought weapons, musical instruments,&nbsp;and a&nbsp;slide show.&nbsp;We brought Liadan,&nbsp;a living example of&nbsp;a distant time. People loved her and&nbsp;with her soulful eyes&nbsp;she seemed to understand she&nbsp;gave&nbsp;them joy and was so gentle with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She joined us&nbsp;for&nbsp;our podcast&nbsp;<em>Wordsmiths and a Wolfhound<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;for&nbsp;<em>Reading with Sheep<\/em>&nbsp;in which I read books&#8230;well, to our sheep!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot_15-1-2025_162_www.youtube.com-Copy.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"523\" height=\"500\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot_15-1-2025_162_www.youtube.com-Copy.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4686\" style=\"width:443px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot_15-1-2025_162_www.youtube.com-Copy.jpeg 523w, http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot_15-1-2025_162_www.youtube.com-Copy-300x287.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 523px) 100vw, 523px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Irish Wolfhounds&nbsp;average only&nbsp;six to eight years.&nbsp;Liadan&nbsp;was&nbsp;seven&nbsp;when we bought&nbsp;our land in Duluth. She bounded happily with us on the trails of&nbsp;our&nbsp;birch forest. She coursed in our huge yard with my sons. My biggest fear was that she would die before we&nbsp;moved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023,&nbsp;we arrived in Tennessee.&nbsp;She&nbsp;followed me up and down our steep hills&nbsp;as I cared for&nbsp;animals.&nbsp;She loved our new sheep.&nbsp;When&nbsp;Chris brought home a 10-week-old Bernese Mountain Dog,&nbsp;they became fast companions.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Liadan-and-Boo-at-door.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"206\" height=\"206\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Liadan-and-Boo-at-door.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4682\" style=\"width:452px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Liadan-and-Boo-at-door.jpeg 206w, http:\/\/www.georgiahill.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Liadan-and-Boo-at-door-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br>In August 2024,&nbsp;Liadan\u2019s&nbsp;hind legs collapsed as we came up&nbsp;the&nbsp;hill from the&nbsp;barn. I could no longer let her&nbsp;accompany&nbsp;me. From then on, she whined pitifully every day when I&nbsp;did my rounds&nbsp;without her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I spent&nbsp;more and more&nbsp;time&nbsp;helping her get outside and cleaning her bedding. The last&nbsp;kids visiting for holidays&nbsp;left December 29. She immediately went downhill, as if she knew she\u2019d seen her kids for the last time. We canceled New Year\u2019s Eve plans to stay home with her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She stopped struggling to go greet the Fed-Ex driver who loved&nbsp;her.&nbsp;One&nbsp;day she \u2018held it\u2019 more than 24 hours, unable to get up even with my help. I&nbsp;understood&nbsp;she would poison herself,&nbsp;rather than wet her bed. I dreaded the&nbsp;ticking&nbsp;hours, bringing the vet ever closer.&nbsp;1:00 came. He arrived late. I was grateful for the extra 20 minutes with Liadan. I sat on the floor, wearing the red skirt and black sweater I wore at Christmas her first year with us,&nbsp;when she\u2019d been injured.&nbsp;Between her black coat and red cast, I&nbsp;realized&nbsp;my dog and I were dressed alike!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m the world\u2019s biggest&nbsp;<em>non-<\/em>crier.&nbsp;I especially don\u2019t&nbsp;cry in front of other people, not even my husband. But tears streamed down my cheeks as the vet tech prepped my dear&nbsp;girl. I looked into her beautiful golden eyes, one last time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vet injected the drugs&nbsp;of&nbsp;peace. Chris watched the light go out of her eyes. I felt her body relax.&nbsp;She was ready to go. That didn\u2019t stop the heart break.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vet helped Chris carry her out on&nbsp;a&nbsp;red sheet, to&nbsp;her&nbsp;grave by the garden. I tucked \u2018Lambie\u2019 into the sheet\u2014the only toy she ever wanted. As the first snow of January fell, we covered&nbsp;her with dirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s great comfort&nbsp;having&nbsp;her at the end of our garden as I work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&nbsp;set out to understand more of medieval life. She taught me something of that, but she was such a profound gift beyond that, a gift in love.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I may always cry when I think of her. But I\u2019m incredibly grateful we had so many years with her\u2014a dog like no other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Thank you, Laura, for that powerfully moving account of a truly wonderful breed.
