Please welcome the talented Alison Morton onto the writing cave feature. Over to you Alison, tell us all!
I hope you didn’t expect a tidy and sleek office? This is Roma Nova central, a messy, working office.
My desk is covered with paper, books, notes, pens, files, cup of coffee or tea, clock, plugged in iPhone, bookstand, files – all those things the workplace analysts say you shouldn’t have on your desk.
The bones of the office which I share with my other half are good; super-tough birchwood work stations which came over to France with us, plus the IKEA office cupboards which adorned my home office when I ran my translation business a few years ago in the UK.
When we bought our French house we converted part of the enormous empty semi-basement into an office for us both. As there was a big fat nothing there, we were able to design it to fit the furniture!
My IT engineer husband worked with the builder and fitted telephones, network cabling, wifi, routers, a second wireless access point and all those techie things you need. We have three HP printers, two colour, one black & white laser, all inherited from my UK business. And we will never need to buy a paper clip, filing tray or document wallet ever again! And of course, it has the essential writer’s sofa for reading and checking.
Actually, it’s a sofa bed where we can accommodate overspill guests and where we’ve slept during one heat wave.
Behind all this material description runs a theme; having a properly equipped and comfortable workplace and one where you can close the door at the end of the workday.
Each of us has her level of untidiness/tidyness – that’s a personality trait – but each writer must make her own, dedicated personalised space so that her muse feels comfortable enough to come out to play.
And it’s in this writing cave that Alison’s book are conceived and born!
The latest in the series, AURELIA, goes back to the late 1960s and features a new heroine…
Late 1960s Roma Nova, the last Roman colony that has survived into the 20th century. Aurelia Mitela is alone – her partner gone, her child sickly and her mother dead – and forced to give up her beloved career as a Praetorian officer.
But her country needs her unique skills. Somebody is smuggling silver – Roma Nova’s lifeblood – on an industrial scale. Sent to Berlin to investigate, she encounters the mysterious and attractive Miklós, a known smuggler who knows too much and Caius Tellus, a Roma Novan she has despised and feared since childhood.
She finds personal happiness in Berlin, but also heartbreak, entrapment and terror. Her old enemy is at the core of all her troubles and she pursues him back home to Roma Nova. But he has struck at her most vulnerable point – her young daughter…
