Recently divorced Alice is forced to make a new life for herself in Yorkshire after discovering her husband’s infidelity. She begins renovating a cottage and gradually makes connections in the village. She has an instant attraction to one of them, Owen. It’s almost as if she’s known him before … but the cottage harbours secrets and these are slowly revealed, affecting both Alice and Owen in ways they cannot imagine.
I’ve enjoyed other Jane Cable books, especially Endless Skies, and have to confess The Cheesemaker’s House has been sitting on my (admittedly enormous) TBR pile for ages. If I’m honest, the cover of the paperback and title didn’t invite me. The publisher has recently given the e-pub a new cover and the accompanying blurb made me pick it up at the weekend. I’m so glad I did. I absolutely loved it!
Do dip in if you have a fondness for heart wrenching love stories, a strong cast of characters and sense of place, a hint of spookiness and lots of history. The writing is vivid and engrossing and it’s a real page turner of a book. Oh – and there’s also a dog!
My favourite read of 2023 so far!
Hope you’re all keeping warm by reading lots of good books. Spring seems a long way off yet.
Love,
