After a dismal summer, the mornings are feeling distinctly crisp, there’s dew on the car windscreens and it’s getting dark by eight thirty. Autumn’s on its way!
Fewer hours of daylight notwithstanding, it’s a season I love. I’m not a fan of very hot weather so prefer the cool sharp days and clear blue skies, and the beauty of the leaves turning. There’s always another Strictly to look forward to as well!
As an ex-teacher autumn is a season I always associate with new beginnings, which is a little strange as it’s the time when the earth is getting sleepy before hibernating for winter. When I was teaching, as soon as the August Bank Holiday was over, I’d be back in the classroom getting it ready for the new academic year. Putting up displays, writing up my new register, reading through notes on a shiny new collection of pupils and planning the term ahead. I’d have music blaring while I tidied cupboards and, although they were long days, time was my own and there were always fun catch ups in the staffroom. And there was always a sense of excitement about the new beginning.
Honor Martin, in my new book out at the end of September, is deputy head of Lullbury Bay’s primary school and I drew on my experience of being a teacher when writing her. She loves her job, is a fixture in her little seaside community and absolutely adores Christmas. For her, the new beginning comes when she meets Jago, a troubled glass artist who has just moved into town. He distracts her so delightfully that it opens up the idea there’s more to life than work.
For Jago Pengethley the new beginning is moving to Lullbury Bay. He arrives with mum Avril and little sister Merryn and they’re all in desperate need of a new start after a devastating family tragedy. Jago is drawn to Honor almost immediately but complications ensue. Well, of course they do. There wouldn’t be an entire novel otherwise!
I had such fun writing New Beginnings at Christmas Tree Cottage and I hope you’ll love Honor and Jago as much as I do.
If you like cosy Christmas romances full of cheesy music and mince pies, decorated beach huts and a seasonally themed fancy dress competition for dogs check it out!
